Edward Brown 1730 – 1797

Following the direct Brown name back through generations & time, Edward Brown appears as our primary ancestor. He was born c. 1730 and died c. 1797 in Jones County, North Carolina.  In 1766 Edward Brown owned land on the north side of the Trent River in Craven County.[i] In 1769 he was on the list of taxpayers in the county.[ii] Ten years later he was still on the north side of the river but, because county borders changed, his land was in Jones County. There are several records of Edward Brown’s land transactions in North Carolina. Edward Brown bought and sold land in Jones County, North Carolina many times and those transactions give evidence of his residence, his wife’s name and the names of his sons. In 1779, the year Jones County was formed, Edward was taxed on his holdings at that time which included 250 acres of land, 25 cattle and four horses. In March 1779 Edward’s neighbor, John Bryan, died. The description of John’s land, which adjoined Edward’s land, tells us they lived north of the Trent River on the Black Swamp.[i] In October 1782 Edward was issued land grant #110 for 25 acres, also located on the north side of the Trent River in Jones County.[ii]
