The home state of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and other founding fathers, Virginia played an important role in the American Revolution (1775-83). During the Civil War (1861-65), the city of Richmond, Virginia, became the capital of the Confederacy, and more than half of the conflict’s battles were fought in the state. Today, many government institutions are headquartered in Virginia, particularly in Arlington, located across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C. In addition to eight presidents, famous Virginians include singer Ella Fitzgerald, tennis star Arthur Ashe, actress Shirley MacLaine and authors Willa Cather and Tom Wolfe.

A few of my blog posts about Virginia Research:

Gordonsville Cemetery, VA, Civil War Soldiers

Gordonsville Hospital, VA

Virginia Ancestors: LVA Library, Land Records, An Extinct County & Maps

Fairfax Regional Library

The Rappahannock Library

The Parish Register of St. Peter’s New Kent County

Library of Virginia, Land Grants

John Hollis in the French & Indian War

Websites for Virginia research:

Access Genealogy – Free Data & Links for Virginia

Ancestor Hunt – Many links to state resources; newspapers

Civil War Museum at Exchange Hotel Hospital w Roster of Deaths

Colonial Virginia County Maps at ancestry

County & Town Histories for Virginia and Other States

Cyndi’s List for Virginia

The Journey Through Hollowed Ground

Library of Virginia Genealogical Records

New Kent Heritage Library

Virginia Facts & Trivia

Virginia Genealogical Society

Virginia Historical Society

Virginia Memory

Virginia Online Historical Newspapers

Read about the Library of Virginia at the In Depth Genealogist.

Virginia genealogy blog:

Prince William County Genealogy

Books:

Books on assorted Virginia Records (military, court) by Bevin Creel

Doran, Michael F.
