Charlotte Temple (Ott) Brumfield was born 5 September 1813 in Louisiana<\/a>. She was the daughter of Jacob Ott III<\/a> and Margaret Jackson. She married Nathaniel Brumfield<\/a>. They had five children. After Nathaniel died she married his brother, Elijah Brumfield.\u00a0Charlotte Temple (Ott) Brumfield\u00a0must have been a strong woman to survive the grief that was a significant part of her life. She outlived her seven siblings, both her husbands and her oldest child. Despite all that sorrow she lived to be 81 years old.<\/p>\n

In 1850 Charlotte and Nathaniel lived in Washington Parish, Louisiana where Nathaniel was a farmer and Charlotte was the mother of four children: Martin Penn Brumfield, 13; Jessie Alexander Brumfield, 11; John D. Brumfield, 8; and Sarah Lucy (Brumfield) Roberts, 5 years old. Laura E. (Brumfield) Alford\u00a0was born the next year. Nathaniel died when he was 53 years old, on 8 February 1852. \u00a0Charlotte became a widow when she was just 39 years old and the mother of five children. The youngest child was just a year old when Nathaniel died. She then married her late husband\u2019s younger brother, Elijah Brumfield, and became the mother of two more children.<\/p>\n

Charlotte became a widow again. Elijah\u2019s death date is unknown but many researchers give 1860 as his year of death. He was listed in the census but may have died after the census was taken. However, in 1863 the local school census shows Elijah (not Charlotte) as the parent of three daughters in school: Laura E. (Brumfield) Alford, Charlotte Angelina (Brumfield) Brock\u00a0and Courtney Rebecca (Brumfield) Tate. Therefore, he most likely died after that school census was taken, making Charlotte a widow for the second time. Charlotte continued to live in Washington Parish, Louisiana. She lived with her son, John D. Brumfield\u00a0and her youngest daughters, Charlotte and Courtney in 1870 \u00a0and 1880. Charlotte died in 1895.<\/p>\n
