Leopold Gartner was born in April 1860. He was the son of Markus S. Gartner & Devorah Dora Horn. He left Hungary and came to New York City where he lived for many years and worked as a tailor. On 24 March 1878 in Manhattan he married Fannie Edelstein. Fannie was the daughter of Adolph Edelstein & Netty Grofs.
Between the 1900 US census & the 1905 NYS census, Leopold changed his surname from Gartner to Gardner. Leopold was still a tailor while Fanny did house work. Three of the children were employed: Florence, 20, was a clerk; Nathaniel, 19, was a telegrapher; Moses, 17, was also a telegrapher. Albert, 15 was at school.
Fannie died 28 February 1908 in New York City. By 1940 Leopold was living with his oldest daughter, Florence, and her family in Buffalo, NY. Leopold died 13 June 1948 in Buffalo, New York.

Leopold Gardner of 77 Manchester Pl., in this city, June 13, 1948, husband of the late Fannie (nee Edelstein): father of Mrs. Florence Weisberg of Buffalo, Mrs. Anna Bearman and Arthur Gardner of New York City; grandfather of Milton S. and Francis Weisberg. Funeral services will be held from the Mesnekoff Funeral Home, 179 Richmond Ave., Tuesday, June 15, at 2 p. m. Flowers gratefully declined. Friends invited.
