Martin Ellis Brumfield was born September 1865 in Mississippi. He grew up and attended school[i]in Washington Parish, Louisiana. In 1870[ii]and 1880[iii]he lived with his parents. In 1898 his name was on the voter registration list for the parish.[iv]Martin married twice. His first wife was Sallie Ann (Warren) Brumfield who died in 1899. His second wife was Dollie (King) Brumfield who died in 1948.
In 1900 Martin and Dollie owned a farm with no mortgage. The census taker was told they had been married less than a year and that Dollie was the mother of no children. Therefore, Martin’s daughter, Lola, who was nine years old, must have been the daughter of his first wife. Martin’s uncle, John D. Brumfield, lived nearby.[i]
In 1910 Dollie was the mother of four children, three living. Jewel Brumfield, 9; Jesse Alton Brumfield, 5; and Ayleen (Brumfield) Porcain, 2 years old. Martin was a farmer and a merchant in a retail store.[ii]In 1920 Jesse and Ayleen were still with their parents and little Dora Lee Brumfield was five years old.[iii]
