Jesse K Brumfield 1807 – 1884

Jesse Kelly Brumfield was born 1 March 1807 in South Carolina. On 11 June 1830 he married Hannah Ann (Youngblood) Brumfield, daughter of Benjamin Youngblood and Susannah (Collins) Youngblood.[i], [ii]Their children were: Andrew Jackson Brumfield, George Washington Brumfield, Benjamin Kelly Brumfield, Henry Sims Brumfield, Mary Luezer Brumfield, Jesse Alexander Brumfield, Joseph Warren Brumfield, James Monroe Brumfield, Susan Lucinda (Brumfield) Andrews, John Richard Brumfield and Leah Elizabeth Brumfield.

Jesse and Hannah suffered the loss of five children at young ages. Benjamin Kelly Brumfield died in 1834, before his second birthday. Jesse and Hannah had to endure the deaths of two of their children in 1845. Jesse Alexander Brumfield was only six when he died in June and Mary Luezer Brumfield was only eight years old when she died in September. In 1858 Leah Elizabeth Brumfield was five years old when she died. In 1863 John Richard Brumfield died when he was 15 years old. At his time we do not know the causes of death for these children.

The family lived in Mississippi.

Jesse Kelly Brumfield and his wife Hannah Youngblood settled first at Union Creek in Pike County. Then they moved to a place known as ‘Love Plantation’ near Bogue Chitto River, south of Holmesville. This plantation had formerly been settled by William Love in 1809. This tract of land passed down through the family from Jesse K. Brumfield to his son Henry Sims Brumfield to his grandson Wyman Lee. Wyman is the second child of John Jesse Lee and Alice Brickham Brumfield, eighth daughter of Martha Elizabeth Bickham and Henry Sims Brumfield.[iii]

The 1850[iv]and 1860[v]US Census reports substantiate their home in Pike County. Jesse, who was a farmer, had land valued at $3,000 in 1850 and at $8,000 in 1860. In 1850 Rees Perkins Brown, son of Moses Brown, a distant relative lived with them. While living in Pike County Jesse was involved in many things.

Jesse Kelly Brumfield was elected Sheriff of Pike County, Miss in 1843 and served four years. He was for many years a Supervisor and was elected to the Mississippi Legislature as representative of Pike County in 1848 and served until 1852.[vi]

Jesse’s service became a tradition in the family with two more generations following in his footsteps.

Chief of Police of McComb [Dudley Atkinson Brumfield] for the past 11 years enters the race for sheriff of Pike County. His grandfather, Jesse Brumfield, was elected sheriff of the county in 1843, 96 years ago. His father, Henry S. Brumfield was treasurer of the county for several years, being elected in 1873. Chief Brumfield is one of the best known men in the county and has made a splendid record as head of the McComb police department.[vii]

Four sons of the family fought in the Civil War: Andrew Jackson Brumfield, George Washington Brumfield, Henry Sims Brumfield and James Monroe Brumfield. They served together in Company K, Brent’s Rifles, 38 Regiment of the Mississippi Calvary. They enlisted 26 April 1862.[viii], [ix]

Jesse moved his family to Amite County where they could be found in 1870[x]and 1880[xi]. In 1880 Jesse was 73 and Hannah was 71 years old.

Jesse Kelly Brumfield died 25 July 1884 in Amite County, Mississippi.[xii],[xiii] Jesse’s Obituary:
