Davis Brumfield 1795 – 1863

Davis Brumfield was the third son of John B. Brumfield and Margaret Kelly.[i]He was born 1 January 1795.[ii]He served in the War of 1812 as a private in Captain Bickham’s Company of the 12/13 Consolidated Regiment of the Louisiana Militia. He enlisted 23 December 1814 in Franklinton, Louisiana. He was involved in the Battle of New Orleans and was discharged 10 March 1815.[iii], [iv], [v], [vi]

On 23 November 1823 he married Cynthia Holmes[vii], daughter of Elisha Warren Holmes and Sarah Stovall and sister of Nancy Virginia (Holmes) Brumfield who married Davis’ brother, Willis. Their children were: Elijah, John, William, Emily, Eveline, Angeline, Elisha, Isaac, Jesse and Louise.[viii]

His name can be found in several land records. On 1 September 1829 Davis acquired a land patent for 80 acres in Walthall County, Mississippi.[ix]In February 1851 he filed a soldier’s bounty land claim.[x]As a result of that claim he received 40 acres of land on 5 January 1854. That land was also in Walthall County.[xi]Davis continued to purchase land in the county. In December 1854 he acquired 40 acres in Section 26[xii], 40 acres in Section 27[xiii]and 40 acres in Section 32 of Township 2N.[xiv]Those records described Davis as being from Pike County, Mississippi.

The 1850 U. S. Census supports the claim that Davis and his family lived in Pike County. His land, at that time was valued at $800. His son, Elijah, was helping on the farm. John and William were students. Davis and Cynthia’s children ranged in age from 24 to 3 three years old.[xv]That year they had three sons and three daughters in school in Pike County.[xvi]

Although living in Pike County, Davis continued to purchase land in neighboring Walthall County. In February 1859 he purchased 200 acres in Sections 22, 23 and 27.[xvii]At the same time he purchased 119.4 acres in towns 2N and 3N.[xviii]

In 1860 the family was in Holmesville. His land was then valued at $20,000 and his personal estate at $2,000. Four children were still at home.[xix]

Three of Davis and Cynthia’s sons served in the Civil War. Elisha Kelly Brumfield, [xx], [xxi], [xxii]and John Brumfield[xxiii]enlisted on 26 April 1862. They served as privates in Company K, Brent’s Rifles, in the 38thMS Regiment of the MS Volunteers. Elisha became a prisoner of war and was paroled at Baton Rogue. Both were discharges 12 May 1865. Their brother, Isaac K. Brumfield, was a private in Company K, Wingfields, of the 3rdRegiment of the Louisiana Calvary. Isaac also became a prisoner of war, paroled at Baton Rogue.[xxiv], [xxv], [xxvi]

While the brothers were fighting for the Confederacy, their father died. Davis died 23 April 1863 in Pike County, Mississippi.[xxvii], [xxviii]After his death Cynthia filed for a pension based on his service in the War of 1812. She received eight dollars a month, starting 30 October 1878.[xxix]

Cynthia died 10 July 1884.

Cinthia [sic] Brumfield was born in the state of Georgia on Dec. 12, 1804 and moved to Pike County, Miss. at the age of 8 years and remained there until death. She married Davis Brumfield in 1824 and reared a large family. He died in 1864. She united with the Union Church in June 1850 and remained a faithful member of that church until her death. She died July 10, 1884. She leaves 7 children, 1 brother, 2 sisters, and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.[xxx]
